Plan to honour local folk

Plans for an awards ceremony which puts the spotlight on people who make a real difference to their community have been announced.

The Mayors Civic Awards aim to honour locals who are workingto improve thelives of others in the borough.

An awards ceromony and dinner will be held on March 20th,2009 at the Banks Stadium.The awards known as the "Doras" have been spilt in to nine categories and from friday people are able to nominate individuals or organisations they feel would be worthy winners.

Last years winners included Margaret Hayes of Pelsall,who won the Good Citizen Award for her efforts as chairman of Autumn Close Residents Association.

Teenager and former Aldridge school pupil Ryan Cockbill also scooped the Over Coming All Odds Award for remaining positive about his future,despite breaking his neck in a swimming pool accident.

Nominations can be submitted from today until December 19th,forms are available by calling 01922 652025.

Aldridge Charity on Television

Members of an Aldridge charity are appealing for the public's help in bringing a £50,000 memorial garden dream to life by voting for them on a TV competition.

Family Guidance and Community Welfares Leighswood Memory Garden is hoping to win the "Peoples Millions" which is being shown on ITV on November 25th.The charity has reached the final of the contest and will compete against Shropshire based Adams Grammar School.If the charity is successful disused land in Lancaster Avenue will be transformed in to a memory garden.

Jan Coleman,charity spokeswoman,said "It is an exciting project".the volunteers are raring to get started.
