Aldridge Lions

As a group we support activities and fund raising events of the local branch of the Aldridge Lions.
Big Thank you for supporting this years fair.
Dear Residents,
The Aldridge and District Lions club would like to thank all the people of Aldridge and surrounding areas for their support received for the Aldridge fair on Saturday 20th June 2009.
This was the 15th Annual Fair organised by the Lions and was the largest event held so far. With over 40 different charity stalls attended and each raised money for their own fund. The feedback from charity stalls was excellent and they all seemed to have a good day.
The Lions own major fund raising project for the last year has been the local branch of the Parkinsons Disease Society and we were pleased to be able to hand overa cheque for £1,600 to the Society.
The crowds attending the event were also potentially the largest so far and,in addition to all the stall attractions, they were entertained by the 31st Sutton Coldfield Scout band, the new Washboard Syncopators Jazz band, the Jo Leigh School of Dance,Khalgani Tribal Belly Dance Group,Walsall Junior Coronets and a demonstration from a local Tai Chi group.
We are now planning our 2010 Aldridge Fair, which will be held on June 19th 2010.

Aldridge Fayre
The 15th annual Aldridge Fayre will be held on "Saturday 20th June". This major community event for the people of Aldridge and surrounding areas is organised by the Aldridge & District Lions Club and has been most successful over a number of years.
Clyde Redfern, Lions Club President, said, “The Fayre, together with our Christmas collections, is one of the major events for the Club in our calendar. It is aimed at the many charity groups in the area who are able to attend the Fayre and raise much needed money for their own funds,”
In addition to the charity stalls, which have a wide range of activities, the Fayre has a full afternoon of arena entertainment, trade stalls and a large fun fair. The arena events include a jazz band, dance displays and musical entertainment. This year it will also include a tug-of-war competition organised and run by Richard Davis of Colossus Gym in Aldridge who are raising funds for the National Institute for Conductive Education. They are taking the opportunity of tying in with the Fayre to obtain maximum support. Teams interested in taking part in this competition can contact Richard on 01922 459410.
Fayre co-ordinator, John Butler, said, “Whilst we already have very good support from charity groups and have a good range of activities lined up for the arena, we are always looking for additional groups who may be able to benefit from the Fayre. Our major problem is in the ongoing funding for the event. As the Fayre is held on Anchor Meadow, an open area, we are not able to charge an admission fee. Previously we have had a good range of trade stalls and some sponsorship which has financed the running of the event. With the current economic conditions, both of these areas are down on previous years and we are urgently seeking more trade stalls and, hopefully, some form of sponsorship.”
Charity groups who would like a stall at the Fayre or businesses wanting to have a trade stand at this major community event can contact John Butler on 0121 353 6400.
If you would like to know more on what the Lions undertake in the area then there will be an open “drinks & nibbles” evening held at the Streetly Community Centre in Foley Road East, Streetly on Friday 24th April at 8:00pm. Further details are also available from John Butler as above.
Regards from,
John Butler.
Year End Roaring Success for Lions
Three pre Christmas weekend collections have raised a total income in excess of £3,300 for the Aldridge and District Lions Club. This money will be going into the Lions charity fund to give a great start for the work of the Club during 2009.
Clyde Redfern, President of the Aldridge & District Lions Club, said, “We collected at three supermarkets in the weekends leading up to Christmas and we are so grateful to the people of Aldridge and surrounding areas for their generosity. We were concerned this year because of the financial squeeze on peoples spending and thought that the amount being donated would be noticeably reduced. However, this did not seem to be the case and people were as generous as in previous years and we are thrilled with the amount we have collected.”
The Lions would like to record their thanks to all those people who generously donated to their collections.
All the proceeds from these collections are used for charitable purposes for a wide range of needs both within the area and elsewhere. Each year the Aldridge Lions make donations or buy goods, equipment, etc for a wide range of needs. This is in addition to their major fund raising project which this year is for the local branch of the Parkinsons Disease Society.

Lions Light Up Aldridge
Christmas is a time for giving and this is no exception for the Aldridge & District Lions Club.
Every year the Club donates time and money to many programmes both locally and internationally. Mike Jobbins, Welfare Chairman for the Aldridge Lions said, “We have a very active programme of giving to the world community. We have just given £750 to Lions Clubs International which will be added to other donations from Lions clubs around the world to fund such programmes as Campaign Sight First a programme to cure sight problems, children, education kits for the developing world and clean water projects. What we are concentrating on now is our programme for local projects. Our major annual project for this year is for the local branch of the Parkinsons Disease Society plus we are actively working with other groups within the local community to identify those in need of help.”
In order to fund this programme of support, the Lions need to raise money and their Christmas collections are some of the main inputs to this fund. The Lions will be collecting during the weekends running up to Christmas and will have their Santa sleigh and Father Christmas at Morrisons in Aldridge on 29th / 30th November, Asda at Queslett on 13th / 14th December and Tesco in Brownhills on 20th / 21st December.
The Aldridge & District Lions Club President, Clyde Redfern, said, “We really appreciate the support we have from the public throughout the year and none more so than during our Christmas collections. It may be cold and sometimes wet for the collectors but we still have fun and it is great to see the many children who come to see Santa in his sleigh. All the operating costs for our Club come from member fees and monies raised at social events. Every penny that goes into our buckets during our collections goes to a worthwhile charitable cause.”
You can also meet the Lions Santa at the “Christmas in Aldridge” event on Friday 5th December. This spectacular, hosted by Walsall Council and Aldridge Village Business Partnership, will see a host of activities including the formal switching on of the new Aldridge Christmas lights. The fun starts at 15.30PM and runs through to 19.00PM
Clyde Redfern said, “We have been associated with the Aldridge Village Partnership for a time now as another way in which we can work more closely with the local community. We are really pleased to be able to be part of this event and to have our Santa available for the children of Aldridge and surrounding areas.”

The Aldridge and District Lions Club are extremely active and the lead up to Christmas is one of the busiest times for the Club members. In order to maintain the level of activities undertaken by the Club, the Aldridge Lions are seeking new members.
On 14th November, the Lions will be holding an open “drinks & nibbles” evening in Stonnall where people can come along, relax over a drink and talk to the members about the work of the Lions. Club President, Clyde Redfern, said, “Being a part of the largest worldwide charity organisation, we are very keen to see the work of the Lions in Aldridge and District continue and increase. Over the years we have raised much funding to support needed requirements in the local area as well as supporting programmes both nationally and internationally. We have a very keen group of people but we do need more support to maintain and improve the work we do. When we are able to support some of the needs of people, particularly those within our local area, it does give some degree of satisfaction but the great thing is that we have a lot of fun whilst we do so.”
It is no coincidence that the date of the drinks & nibbles evening is the same as the BBC Children in Need Appeal. The Aldridge & District Lions have on previous occasions raised funds for this appeal as they have for many other similar worthwhile causes.
To obtain further information on the open evening, contact Mike Barker (01922 456558) or Harry Fry (01922 451638) or you can meet the Lions at Tesco in Brownhills this weekend – 25th & 26th October when they will be collecting for their charity fund and distributing information.
The Lions will also be having their normal Christmas collections, complete with Santa and his sleigh, at Morrisons in Aldridge on 29th / 30th November, Asda at Queslett on 13th / 14th December and Tesco in Brownhills on 20th / 21st December.
The Lions’ Santa and sleigh will also be supporting the Aldridge Village Business Partnership at their party for the Christmas lights switch-on to be held in the Aldridge precinct on 5th December at 4:00pm.
Clyde Redfern said, “Over the next few weeks we are going to be very active in the area and we hope that many people come to talk to us about the work of the Lions. It is very rewarding work and the more people we can involve the more people we will be able to help.”
